I replaced my in tank filter at 800 hours as a preventative (not a problem), replace my inlines around 50 to 100 hours. I do run a tank sock. More than likely your plastic filter had a crack in it, they turn black from rotor material in the fuel pump. but you are also looking through opaque plastic, when I cut my 800 hour plastic filter open
Id stay 300 hundred miles max after the first change, for a couple changes then migrate to a more normal interval. Once you get about 5 or 6,000 miles, you'll notice the oil runs cleaner and you can do 1000 miles on ocassion (17 or 18 hours), I would look towards 800 miles or 15 hours as more as more a norm, with mostly street.
Regardless, hard-core off-road dual-sport purists felt that the Honda CRF450L was not as close to the CRF450RX off-road racebike as the KTM 500 EXC-F is to its 450 XC-F racer. CLoses thing I found was 15 hour oil changes. 15 hour is a good average for Hoolligan use, but the motors are very tight in the first 500 /1000 miles, so extremely hard on the oil, I had a solid 800 to 1000 miles before going to a 15 hour interval, other wise I pretty much average 10 to 17 hours, just depending on my usage, Historically Ive

TwistiT. Posted December 10, 2007. I came off a XR400 and can safely say that the maintainence is not that bad. Change the oil every 10hrs, filters and valve clearances every 20 and air filter when ever dirty.

The manual says every 15hrs, or 100l of fuel. That works out to about every 12 tanks of gas on the EXC. I prefer going by mileage, so I set my Panoram computer for a service reminder every 500 miles (I assume approx. 25mpg just to be even more conservative). When the reminder shows up, I do oil, valves, etc. all in one shot. Crash

Fuel Recommendations. The recommended fuel is specified in the Owner's Manual. This must meet the requirements of the EN 228 standard or equivalent, and must show the corresponding octane number (ROZ). Do not use fuel made from methanol (e.g. M15, M85, M100) or with a proportion of more than 10 % ethanol (e.g. E15, E25, E85, E100).
