Probably the idle jets are set too lean. From what I have read, the factory settings are often wrong. Drill out the plugs and adjust. If you use the right size drill you can get in with a small screwdriver and make the adjustments without totally removing the plug. I just took out the battery and it is a "PARTS UNLIMITED BATTERY" number 2113-0091 . I am assuming this was not the original honda battery either. The only way I can think of to trouble shoot is to put a new battery in first since it has to be at least 2yrs old at minimum.
checking for voltage DC. and you will want to hook the testers negative lead to a good ground. in that area the engine block is usually a good one. then probe behind the connector for the right handlebar switch assembly. with the key on you should be getting battery voltage at the black/white wire. then press in the starter button and check the yellow/red wire for voltage.

Torque them. That way you know you're right. Having a front wheel part company at speed just doesn't seem worth the risk.
